Roach: All Algieri has is a good jab
Boxing coach Freddie Roach acknowledged that undefeated American Chris Algieri has one punch in his arsenal that is worth mentioning.
The problem is, Roach said, that's about the only thing Algieri has in terms of offense.
“He's got a good jab. That's it," the feisty boxing trainer said in Bad Left Hook.
But boxing promoter Joe DeGuardia said in Boxing Scene that this jab will be Algieri’s key in beating Pacquiao.
Algieri, at 5-foot-11, enjoys a longer reach than Pacquiao, which is why DeGuardia feels that the American fighter will be able to offset the Filipino’s speed.
“A jab controls everything. A jab can equalize speed. A jab can equalize power. A jab is a very effective tool and Chris has it. And sure that is probably the most vital aspect of the fight - is the jab," DeGuardia said.
Pacquiao is scheduled to defend his WBO welterweight title against Algieri in Macau on November 22 (November 23, Manila time).
One thing that concerns Roach about the fight is Algieri’s tendency to stay out of his opponent’s reach by constantly moving with his feet.
"His style, he's a bit of a runner. Pacquiao doesn't particularly like fighting guys who run so much,” he said. “We'll figure out a way to beat him. It's not a problem.”
