Pacquiao among 'most powerful people' in boxing
MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao remains among the most powerful and influential figures in boxing today, according to Yahoo! Sports.
In the “25 Most Powerful” list compiled by Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin lole, the eight-division champion ranked No. 8, just behind his rival Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“He's not as big as Mayweather in the U.S., but he's got a bigger fan base worldwide. The Philippines is a boxing-mad country and Pacquiao has great influence with the young boxers emerging there,” Iole said.
Topping the list is Mayweather’s “mysterious” adviser Al Haymon.
“The most powerful guy in boxing is also its most mysterious. You'll rarely, if ever, see him in front of a television camera and you'll never catch him speaking to a reporter. He's not a promoter. He's not a manager. But when Haymon says jump, plenty of people in boxing listen,” said Iole.
Haymon is the one who reportedly calls the shots in Mayweather’s camp. He also handles the boxer’s heir apparent, Adrien Broner.
Other boxing figures in the “most powerful” list is Top Rank president Todd duBoef (No. 2), Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer (No. 3), new boxing promoter 50 Cent (No. 4) and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum (No. 5).
