Ateneo clobbers UE, nabs solo lead
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – The Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) Blue Eagles crushed the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors, 68-51, in the main game of the 75th UAAP men's basketball on Saturday.
After a lackluster performance in the first half, the Eagles ripped through the Warriors defenses in the third en route to Ateneo’s 5th win in 6 starts.
The victory also gave Ateneo tactician Norman Black his 100th victory as Blue Eagles coach.
Kiefer Ravena led the Eagles with an all-around performance, tallying 12 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal.
Ateneo center Greg Slaughter churned out 14 points with 10 rebounds.
The Warriors were just trailing by 1 point in the first quarter, 18-19, as they took advantage of the Eagles’ sluggish start.
Ateneo slowly found its mark in the second quarter and posted a 37-34 advantage at the half.
The Eagles began pounding against the Warriors’ defenses in the third, blasting the Recto-based dribblers with a searing 17-5 exchange.
Ateneo was already up by 15 points, 54-39, by the end of the third.
In the fourth, the Warriors have virtually given up their perimeter defense, allowing Ravena and Tonino Gonzaga to drive to the basket with ease.
Ateneo now enjoys the solo lead in the UAAP standings with one win ahead of Far Eastern University (4-1).
UE, meanwhile, remain at the bottom of the standings with 4 straight losses.
