Donaire to wear yellow trunks as Cory tribute
MANILA -- Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will be donning yellow colored trunks in his August 15 fight against Pamana’s Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion as a tribute to the late former president Corazon Aquino.
“There’s still going to be a little bit of red which symbolizes who I am but wearing yellow is my way to pay respect to our former leader,” said Donaire in a report posted on InsideSports.ph.
In facing Concepcion, Donaire will be emulating Mrs. Aquino’s “Laban” spirit as he tries anew the super flyweight division.
“She has fought, just like her sign ‘Laban’ which means fight. She always had that fight and love for the country to just get it to another level. I just have great respect for the late, former president. It’s my way to pay tribute and give my respects to her,” he said.
Donaire, who relinquished his International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization flyweight titles, admitted that he may have his hands full against “El Torito”.
It was Concepcion who inflicted AJ Banal his first loss to win the World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super flyweight title. The Panamanian, however, lost the crown to Mexico’s Jorge Arce.
“He is a tough guy and I’ve got to try and figure him out early and then if given an opportunity, I’ll take him,” said Donaire.
Donaire and Concepcion will be fighting it out for the interim WBA title at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The “Filipino Flash” is currently training at the Wild Card Gym in Las Vegas.
