RING title at stake in Donaire vs Nishioka
MANILA, Philippines – The RING super bantamweight title is now also at stake in the upcoming bout between Nonito Donaire Jr. and Toshiaki Nishioka on October 13.
The RING Magazine editorial board has decided to throw the belt into the mix after considering the ranking of Donaire and Nishioka in their super bantamweight list.
Nishioka of Japan currently holds the No. 1 super bantamweight rating in the RING’s list, followed by World Boxing Association (WBA) champion Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba at No. 2 and Donaire at No. 3.
But the RING editorial board said Donaire’s stature as No. 4 pound-for-pound best, aside from his ownership of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) 122-pound titles, outweighed Rigondeaux’s credentials.
“So this is it: Nishioka, the No. 1 122-pounder in the world, vs. Donaire, No. 4 pound for pound, for THE RING junior featherweight (super bantamweight) championship,” said RING Magazine associate editor Michael Rosenthal.
Also to be disputed on the October 13 bout are Donaire’s IBF and WBO titles.
