MANILA – Far Eastern University (FEU) squandered a 22-point advantage but still managed to topple erstwhile league-leader National University (NU), 71-62, in the main game of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena on Saturday.

Carl Bryan Cruz led the way for the Tamaraws with a career-high 16 points for FEU's fourth win. The green shirts also got good games from Achie Inigo and Mike Tolomia who tallied 14 and 13, respectively.

FEU took an early 21-16 headway with Cruz leading the charge by scoring 11 points in the first quarter. The Tamaraws further widened the gap in the second period by connecting most of their shots from the outside to make it 43-20 against the Bulldogs.

NU then launched a furious 15-6 run, including successive triples from Rev Diputado to cut FEU’s lead to 54-42 in the third.

The Bulldogs surged once more in the final quarter with a 14-0 run that brought down the Tamaraws' lead to just 4 points.

FEU, however, responded with an 8-3 wind-up, including timely baskets from Tolomia and Anthony Hargrove to quell NU’s uprising.

Gelo Alolino finished the game with 13 points on 6 of 16 field goals for the Bulldogs, while Glenn Khobuntin had 9 points to go with his 8 rebounds.

With the loss, NU fell to 5-2 behind new leader Ateneo (5-1).

FEU, on the other hand, improved to 4-2 to tie defending champion La Salle in third place.
