B-Meg cage crew to play under Petron flag
MANILA Philippines – Following Manila Electric Co.’s (Meralco) entry to Asia’s first play-for-pay league, Petron has staked its chips into the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Along with Meralco’s purchase of the Sta. Lucia team, the PBA Board of Governors has also approved the transfer of B-Meg Derby Ace’s franchise to Petron according to PBA.ph.
“Both deals got the approval of the PBA Board without a hitch,” said PBA chief Sonny Barrios.
This means the core of the B-Meg crew, which includes recently awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP) James Yap, will play under Petron’s flag.
Both Purefoods/B-Meg and Petron belonged under San Miguel Corp. However, Purefoods will soon be sold to Del Monte Pacific Ltd. and Century Pacific Group of Companies.
Joining Yap in Petron are Kerby Raymundo, Marc Pingris, Roger Yap, Rafi Reavis, Don Allado, Paul Artadi, KG Canaleta and PJ Simon.
In an interview with ANC’s hardball sports program last Wednesday, B-Meg board representative Rene Pardo said they are currently negotiating with the rest of the team.
“We have 7 players with expiring contracts by August 31. We're still in the process of reviewing and negotiating with the 7 players,” he said.
Petron is also looking for a team coach to replace Ryan Gregorio, who has already transferred to Meralco.
