Donaire, Garcia to headline Texas fight card: report
MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will reportedly return to action on November 9 in a fight card held in Texas which will also feature his stablemate and good friend Mikey Garcia.
ESPN.com reported that Donaire and Garcia “will likely be fighting in separate bouts on an HBO doubleheader.”
Garcia, who is making his junior lightweight debut against Rocky Martinez, will headline the event that Top Rank boss Bob Arum said may be held in San Antonio or Dallas.
Meanwhile, Donaire will be returning to the ring for the first time since losing to Guillermo Rigondeaux last April. Talks are ongoing for a potential rematch against Vic Darchinyan, whom Donaire knocked out when they fought in 2007.
“Donaire is ready to fight Darchinyan, but Darchinyan is also saying he won’t fight at 126 pounds,” said Cameron Dunkin, who manages both Donaire and Garcia.
Dunkin said he will talk to Top Rank bosses about finding a different opponent for Donaire, who will only fight at 126 pounds.
“Vic wants to fight at 122 to 124. Okay, I’m sorry about that because Donaire is going to fight at 126,” he said.
