Roach baffled by Pacquiao-Algieri match up
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing coach Freddie Roach admitted that he is puzzled by Bob Arum’s decision to pit Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao against Chris Algieri.
Roach described Algieri as a “runner,” which could result to a boring fight for the Filipino champion.
“I have no idea why he picked that guy. He told me that he beat Ruslan (Provodnikov), and he’s a good fight for Manny and that was it,” the feisty boxing trainer said in Tha Boxing Voice.
Algieri will be challenging Pacquiao for the WBO welterweight crown on November 22 in Macau. The bout will take place at a 144-pound catchweight.
Arum, Top Rank Inc. CEO, earlier explained that the story line between Pacquiao and Algieri is what makes the fight appealing.
“You know, a college kid who has a masters degree [from New York Institute of Technology], a superb boxer, speaks well,” Arum said in a previous interview with Boxing Scene.
Algieri became Arum’s top choice for Pacquiao after the relatively unknown American pulled off a surprising upset against Provodnikov last June.
“He has all the elements to make an interesting match for Manny Pacquiao both inside and outside the ring,” Arum said.
