Perpetual wins 3rd straight in Fr. Martin Cup
MANILA, Philippines – The University of Perpetual Help Altas and the Diliman Preparatory School (DPS) came up with big wins in the 11th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup at the St. Placid Gym in San Beda.
The Altas, bannered by Michael Cenita and Nigerian big man Akhuetie Bright, blasted the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 85-55.
Cenita talled 19 points while Bright scored 14 for the Altas, who marched to their third consecutive win in Group B of the senior division.
Crispin Elopre scored all of his five points in the opening quarter as the Altas established an 18-11 advantage.
Bright and another Nigerian, Prince Eze, then took turns controlling the shaded lanes and limited the Maroons to six points in the next period.
The Altas were never in trouble after they established a 40-17 lead over UP.
Meanwhile, the DPS cagers pulled off a 68-62 upset of defending champions University of the East.
Mark Yaron and Paul Soleta provided DPS with 19 and 14 points, respectively, and their efforts allowed the team to claim their first win in four games.
The Warriors struggled as they played without two injured guards, but managed to come close, 57-62, behind TJ Sumang’s triple.
But DPS was able to move out of reach in the ensuing play after Max Sedilla split his charities.
It was UE’s first loss in four games, dropping them to the second spot in Group A.
The Warriors’ defeat gave the Lyceum Philippines University Pirates a chance to grab the solo lead, after they beat the San Sebastian Stags 80-57 last Saturday.
