Tigers, Warriors battle for share of second
MANILA, Philippines – The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers and the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors gun for a share of second place when they take on each other in the second round of the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Tigers and Red Warriors finished the first round with identical 4-3 records.
In their first round meeting, the Tigers defeated the Red Warriors, 88-77, despite playing without injured swingman Jeric Teng.
The Red Warriors played that game without big man Charles Mammie, who was serving a one-game suspension, and UST’s Karim Abdul took advantage as he exploded for 25 points to go along with 13 rebounds and two blocks.
It remains to be seen if Teng will suit up for today’s game, as UST coach Pido Jarencio has said that his star is “day to day.”
National University vaulted to second place yesterday with a 5-3 record after defeating the FEU Tamaraws.
Meanwhile, in the first game of the double-header, five-time defending champions Ateneo seek to keep their Katipunan rivals University of the Philippines winless.
Ateneo was 3-4 after the first round, but one of their wins was a 72-64 defeat of the Fighting Maroons.
The Blue Eagles are hoping that the two-week tournament break will work in their favor, especially when it comes to the rest and recovery of their key players, including Kiefer Ravena and Ryan Buenafe.
The “Battle of Katipunan” tips off at 2:00 pm, followed by the UST-UE showdown at 4:00 pm.
