MANILA – University of Sto. Tomas (UST) weathered a furious Adamson University (AdU) fight back in the second half to hack out a 61-59 victory on Saturday at the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.

Up by 6 after two quarters, the Growling Tigers were caught flat-footed in the third when Don Trollano, Jansen Rios and the rest of the Soaring Falcons swung back with a 20-7 run to post a 49-44 lead.

UST regained its bearings and tied the scores 52-all going to the payoff period. It was neck and neck at that point until Louie Vigil nailed a jumper that gave the Tigers a 60-59 breather.

After Aljon Mariano’s charity that jacked UST’s lead to 61-59 with 10 seconds to go, the Tigers leaned on its defense until time expired.

This kept Adamson winless in 8 games.

Rios finished with a career-high 22 points to go with his 8 rebounds for the Falcons, while Trollano added 16 markers and 10 caroms.

Vigil piled 13 points and 8 rebounds for the Espana-based dribblers, while Ed Daquioag added 11 points.

UST improved to 4-4.
