Sonsona gunning for world title
MANILA – “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona, the 19-year-old fighter from the Philippines, is setting his sights on the WBO super flyweight title as he battles veteran Puerto Rican Jose “Carita” Lopez on September 4.
Lopez, 37, will be banking on experience as he defends his belt against Sonsona at Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada.
Promoter Sammy Gello-ani told PhilBoxing.com that Sonsona is in peak condition. Trainer Nonito Donaire, Sr. added that his ward is in top shape as he has gone through 150 rounds of sparring.
“We need to be ready for this fight because we are dealing with a veteran who has much more experience than Sonsona,” noted Donaire, the father of newly-crowned WBA interim junior bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, Jr.
“Lopez may be old but he [is] still a dangerous fighter,” he added.
The elder Donaire declared: “We will not disappoint our country, we are 110 percent ready.”
Sonsona and his team are set to hold their final week of heavy sparring at the Elorde Gym. They will continue training in Canada with former IBF super bantamweight champion Steve Molitor.
Sonsona, who hails from General Santos City, has won the WBO oriental flyweight title and WBO Asia Pacific Youth flyweight belt.
