MANILA, Philippines -- Petron Blaze came up with the big baskets in crunch time to spoil the Ginebra debuts of coach Ato Agustin and big man Japeth Aguilar, 101-95, in their PBA Governors Cup clash at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.
After two charities by LA Tenorio tied the game for the last time at 93-all with 2:22 to go, the Blaze Boosters scored eight straight points to finally pull away.
Import Elijah Millsap, Arwind Santos, Doug Kramer and Marcio Lassiter all contributed in the decisive run, while Ginebra could only respond with a bucket from import Dior Lowhorn in garbage time.
"The players really played well defensively, and our transition offense also worked for us," said Petron coach Gee Abanilla, who also earned his first victory as a head coach in the pros.
"It's good that we played good defense on Dior. He's so big, and we had a hard time defending against him," he added.
Lowhor had 29 points and 11 rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Aguilar, making his debut in a Ginebra uniform, had eight points, five rebounds and one block in 18 minutes, and was on the bench during crunch time.
Millsap topscored with 24 points for Petron while Lassister added 23 markers.
Petron now has a 1-1 record, rebounding from their 83-89 setback at the hands of Meralco in their conference opener last Friday.
