Docena grabs solo lead in nat'l junior chess
MANILA, Philippines -- National Master (NM) Jerad Docena nabbed the solo lead in the grand finals of the 2013 National Juniors Boys and Girls Chess Championships at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Vito Cruz, Manila.
Docena, supported by Juan Republik Foods Inc. and Spare and Strike Restaurant, defeated NM Alcon John Datu to take the reins after eight rounds of the tournament on Thursday.
Docena, who beat Jose Carlo Castro in the seventh round, tallied a total of six points, half point ahead Castro.
Castro came in second after beating Tristan Jared Cervero in the eighth round for a total of 5.5 points.
The tournament is organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
Top seed FIDE Master Haridas Pascua, NM Narquinden Reyes and Mc Dominique Lagula climbed to a share of the third place with five points each. -- Marlon Bernardino
