Don't count Algieri out, says ex-champ

MANILA – Former world champion Austin Trout said it would be a mistake for any boxer to underestimate Chris Algieri, who is due for a November fight date with Manny Pacquiao.

Trout, ex-WBA light middleweight champion, said he never thought Algieri would win against Ruslan Provodnikov last June.

But Algieri did just that by eking out a split decision verdict against the Siberian Rocky.

The Long Island native is now scheduled to meet Pacquiao for a 12-round boxing joust.

“I don’t want to talk down to Chris Algieri because they said that about him and Provodnikov and he ended up coming back and beating Provodnikov, and I’m glad they didn’t rob him for that either,” said Trout in On The Ropes Boxing Radio

This is why he refuses to pick a winner between Pacquiao and the taller Algieri.

“Algieri is a good boxer, but will he be able to outbox Manny Pacquiao? I don’t personally think so, but again, I didn’t think he was gonna be able to outbox Provodnikov like he did.”

Pacquiao and Algieri are set to embark on a multi-city press tour next week to promote their fight.

The tour starts on Monday at the Venetian Macau and will have stops in Shanghai, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York.

Pacquiao is also set to throw the first pitch in a Major League Baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Nationals on September 1 at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

The tour wraps up on September 4 in New York.
