Jr chessers Docena, Fronda rule nationals
MANILA, Philippines -- National Master (NM) Jerad Docena and Woman National Master (WNM) Jan Jodilyn Fronda dominated their respective divisions in the 2013 National Juniors Grand Finals boys and girls chess championships in Vito Cruz, Manila on Thursday.
The 15-year-old Docena settled for a fighting draw in the last round with top seed Fide Master (FM) Haridas Pascua to finish with 6.5 points and claim the title of the boys division.
"My sacrifices have paid off," said Docena.
Crispin Docena, father of Jerad, thanked Juan Republik Foods Inc., Spare and Strike Restaurant and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. for supporting his son’s campaign.
"Sasamantalahin ko na po ang pagkakataon para makapagpa-abot ng pasasalamat," he said.
Fronda, on the other hand, finished in a two-way tie for first with fellow six pointer WNM Janelle Mae Frayna.
Fronda, however, took the title due to higher tie break points. -Marlon Bernardino
