Henderson injured; UFC 151 scrapped
Jones refuses Sonnen fight
MANILA, Philippines – Light heavyweight challenger Dan Henderson suffered a knee injury, which resulted in the scrapping of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 151.
Henderson was supposed to challenge reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in the main event of UFC 151 on September 1.
“Dan Henderson has a partial tear in his MCL (Medial collateral ligament) and couldn’t continue. He tried to train and continue to work out. He saw doctors, and there was nothing we could do to save the fight. For the first time in 11 years, we’re going to cancel an event,” said White in Sherdog.
White said Chael Sonnen was initially named as replacement opponent, but Jones refused.
“Chael Sonnen accepted the fight and wanted the fight bad. As of [8 or 9 p.m.] last night, we had a fight. We started making commercials. The one thing I never thought would happen happened. Jon Jones said, ‘I’m not fighting Chael Sonnen on eight days’ notice,’” said White.
Jones will now face Lyoto Machida in a rematch on September 22.
Jones defeated Machida in UFC 140 which took place in 2011.
