MANILA, Philippines – The Letran Knights seized the solo lead in the NCAA men’s basketball rankings by weathering a resurgent San Beda Lions’ squad, 74-67, on Saturday.
Ford Ruava scored 15 points to lead the way for the Knights who surged to a 40-34 halftime advantage in the half.
Ola Adeogun teamed up with Baser Amer to help wipe out the deficit with a 12-0 run in the third.
The Knights recovered with a 59-58 lead shortly before the fourth, then held off the Lions from mounting another comeback.
Letran is now perched atop the standings with an 8-1 win-loss slate, while relegating San Beda to second with a 7-2 mark.
Meanwhile, Arellano U knocked down Jose Rizal University with a come-from-behind 67-64 win to snap a four-game losing streak.
The Chiefs trailed the Heavy Bombers, 50-57, midway the fourth period before uncorking a 15-5 run to nab a 65-62 advantage 30 seconds remaining.
Paolo Pontejos tried to send the game to overtime, but all of his final attempts beyond the arc missed their mark.
Prince Caperal led the Chiefs with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Arellano now has three wins against six defeats while Jose Rizal fell to its fourth loss in nine games.
