NU frustrates UST anew
MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – University of Sto. Tomas (UST) failed to avenge their first-round loss to National University (NU) as it succumbed to the Bulldogs, 61-75, on Saturday’s UAAP men’s basketball.
NU’s fastbreak plays proved too much for UST to handle as the España-based dribblers again lost their star player Jeric Teng, who bailed out after suffering cramps on his hamstring.
Robin Rono came off the bench as he stepped up for a struggling Ray Parks by firing four triples in the final quarter.
He finished with a total of 19 points in 19 minutes.
Coach Eric Altamirano credited his second unit for providing the added kick for NU, which enjoyed a 36-33 halftime lead over UST.
“It's was a really a collective effort… The bench came up and it was led by Robin Rono. He's actually one of our stoppers but for this game, he provided us with his three point shots,” said the coach during the post-game interview.
For his part, Rono said defense was his priority but he said his offense just clicked.
“Nag stick kami sa game plan ng mga coaches, always ready sa opensa pero first option is defense talaga.”
The win was NU’s fourth straight for a total of 7 wins against 3 losses.
The Tigers came within 60-57 in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs surged ahead with a 7-0 run to keep UST at bay.
Aside from Rono, three other Bulldogs churned out double figures.
Denice Villamor scored 18 points, while Parks settled for 10 points. Joshua Alolino also had 10.
Karim Abdul scored 18 for UST, while Kevin Ferrer added 11.
It was the Tigers’ fourth loss in nine starts.
The Tigers also lost to the Bulldogs, 67-71, in the teams’ first-round meeting in July.
