MANILA, Philippines – Batang Gilas escaped with a 72-69 victory over Malaysia in the 23rd FIBA Asia Under-18 Championships in Doha, Qatar early Monday morning to set up a quarter-final showdown against Chinese-Taipei.

A three-pointer from San Beda Red Cub Joshua Caracut with 24 seconds to go gave Batang Gilas a 72-69 advantage, but Malaysia still had a chance to steal the game when Mark Dyke was called for an unsportsmanlike foul.

Joon Lock Wee misfired on both of the charities given, however, and he then missed from beyond the arc as Batang Gilas escaped with the much-needed victory.

The win allowed the Filipino youngsters to wrap up the third seed in Group E and seal a quarter-finals berth against Chinese-Taipei. It was also a boost of confidence to the squad after having lost to China by 42 points in their previous game.

Radge Tongco topscored for Batang Gilas with 22 points, while Kobe Paras (12 points) and Dyke (10 points, 10 rebounds) also finished in double figures.

Batang Gilas will play Chinese-Taipei on Tuesday, with the winner of that game facing the winner of another quarter-finals game between China and Kazakhstan.
