MANILA, Philippines –Filipino archer Gabriel Moreno made history on Sunday as he won a gold medal in the mixed international team event in the Youth Olympic Games at the Fangshan archery field.

Moreno teamed up with China's Li Jiaman to claim the gold medal, beating the pair of Cynthia Freywald and Muhamad Zarif Syahiir Zolkepeli, 6-0, in the final match.

It was the first gold medal for the Philippines in the Youth Olympic Games.

"Coming from a third world country like the Philippines, this medal means everything to me," Moreno said in an interview with the YOG website.

"I almost missed this medal today. I was in a taxi and the driver didn't know the way," he revealed. "I had to go into the quarterfinals with almost no warm-up time."

"But thankfully, that did not harm my performance."

Li and Moreno, despite competing amid windy and overcast conditions, put together an impressive performance as they scored only tens and nines in all three sets.

They took the first set 38 to 37, the second 38-35, and the third set 37-to 33.

Li was complimentary of her Filipino partner, saying: "The partnership with the Filipino athlete was important, as without him I could do not do it. We complimented each other well."

Meanwhile, Eric Peters and Marijam Tuokkola won the bronze medal over Regina Romero and Rick Martens.
