Condit: Hendricks has 'puncher's chance' vs GSP
MANILA, Philippines – Former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit is giving top contender Johny Hendricks a “puncher’s chance” to defeat title-holder Georges St-Pierre when they meet at UFC 167 on November 16.
Hendricks is known for his punching power, having vaulted into the title conversation with his knockout of Martin Kampmann at UFC 154. He earned the title shot when he out-pointed Condit at UFC 158 last March.
But Condit believes that Hendricks’ exceptional power will be his only advantage against St-Pierre, who is considered as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the UFC.
“I think Johny Hendricks has a puncher’s chance,” Condit told Yahoo! Sports. “He’s obviously a big puncher. He’s got the power to make it a short night for GSP.”
“But I feel like GSP is going to out-technique Johny Hendricks,” he added. “I think (GSP’s) wrestling – and I’m not an expert on wrestling – I think his wrestling is going to make the difference. Georges is going to be able to take him down and control the fight.”
St-Pierre has not lost inside the Octagon since April 2007, when Matt Serra knocked him out in the first round to claim the welterweight championship.
St-Pierre got his revenge in April 2008, when he knocked out Serra to become the undisputed UFC welterweight champion.
