'Boom Boom', 3 other Pinoys win in ‘RP vs. World’
MANILA, Philippines – Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and 3 other Filipino boxers in the main card of “Philippines vs. the World” made a clean sweep of their foreign opponents Saturday night in Cebu.
According to Philboxing.com, Bautista won a technical decision over Alejandro “Zorrito” Barrera, the cousin of Mexican great Marco Antonio Barrera, in their featherweight clash at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
"Boom Boom" engaged Barrera in an all-out brawl for 4 straight rounds.
However, a cut on Barrera's left eyelid at 1:14 of Round 4 prompted officials to stop the fight and award the technical win to Bautista.
Also triumphant were comrades Jimrex “The Executioner” Jaca, Milan “Milenyo” Melindo, and Florante “Little Pacquiao” Condes, who all scored impressive wins against their respective opponents.
Jaca stopped Jose “Pipino” Cuevas Jr. with a left straight to the jaw to halt the featherweight fight with 2:22 minutes left in Round 1.
Cuevas Jr., son of Mexican boxing legend Jose “Pipino” Cuevas, failed to beat the count. Earlier in the round, Jaca connected with a left uppercut that wobbled the Mexican.
Undefeated Melindo, meanwhile, knocked out Korean Jin-Man Jeon in Round 2 of their flyweight clash.
The Korean was caught with a powerful left uppercut. This sent him crashing down the canvas just 43 seconds into the second round.
Melindo now wants to campaign against boxers in lower weight classes.
“Little Pacquiao” Condes also came out with a dominating performance against Sofyan Effindi, scoring a unanimous decision against the tenacious Indonesian.
Condes knocked down Effindi in the 6th round on his way to a shutout victory.
The Romblon native received 80-71 in all of the judges’ scorecards.
Philippines vs. the World will be shown in ABS-CBN on Sunday starting 10:15 a.m., with a replay over Studio 23 at 9:30 p.m. -- With reports from Philboxing.com
