Ateneo edges St. Benilde in Fr. Martin Cup
MANILA, Philippines -- The Ateneo Blue Eagles drew big baskets from Joma Adornado and Jerie Pingoy in crunch time to defeat the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 70-60, in the 11th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup last Sunday at the St. Placid Gym in San Beda.
Adornado and Pingoy fired a couple of triples in the last 2:13 of the game, and their efforts helped the Blue Eagles overtake the Blazers, who had taken a 47-43 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Cameroonian Chibueze Ikeh's presence underneath slowed down the Blazers in the final canto, as he led with 15 points and dominated the boards with 14 rebounds.
It was Ateneo's second victory in three games.
In another seniors showdown, Jeriz Ruiz topscored for the Arellano University Chiefs as they downed the University of the East, 64-57, to hike their record to 3-2.
Meanwhile, Hope Christian School and the San Beda Red Cubs continued their winning ways in the juniors division.
The Red Cubs banked on baskets from Addi Velasquez and Evan Furaque as they escaped with a 71-67 victory over Emilio Aguinaldo College-ICA in Group B for their fourth win in a row.
Velasquez finished with 20 points and Furaque added 17 markers for the Red Cbs.
John Apacible and James Galoso came up big for the Hope cagers, who marched to their fifth straight win in Group A with an 83-61 pummeling of the Trinity University of Asia Junior Stallions.
Apacibe struck with 12 points while Galoso added 11 markers for home, which took charge right away with a 21-5 first quarter spread.
