Pinoy chessers shine in Malaysia tourney
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino chess players dominated the Battle Chess Selangroku II in Malaysia, with National Master (NM) Carlo Lorena taking home the crown in the tournament held last August 24 in Selangor.
Lorena finished with 6.5 points after beating Fide Master (FM) Anas Nazreen Bakri of Malaysia in the final round of the rapid chess competition.
Lorena, an instructor in the KL Chess Kids Academy, was undefeated in the tournament that attracted 149 participants.
Another Filipino, NM Nelson Villanueva, collected six points in seven rounds of play, good for second place.
Villanueva claimed second by virtue of having a better tie-break points than compatriots NM Efren Bagamasbad and Eden Diano, FM Ronnie Lim, Jax Hong, Zaidan Zulkipli and Evan Timothy Capel of Malaysia. -- By Marlon Bernardino
