UE to appeal suspensions of Mammie, Casajeros
MANILA, Philippines -- The University of the East (UE) will file a formal appeal to the UAAP Technical Committee regarding the two-game suspensions of center Charles Mammie and guard Lord Casajeros, according to the university's sports director, Rod Roque.
"We talked with the Commissioner (Chito Loyzaga) first to clarify things about the calls," Roque told reporters on Wednesday. "He explained it very well to us, but as an obligation to the university, we will file a formal appeal tomorrow."
"It's not a protest, it's an appeal," Roque stressed. "We will elevate it to the Technical Committee and we'll see what happens after we file the appeal."
Loyzaga announced on Tuesday that Mammie and Casajeros were both suspended for the Red Warriors' next two games, which will be against National University and La Salle.
Casajeros had previously been warned for an unsportsmanlike foul, and was then called for another unsportsmanlike foul in their game against Far Eastern University last Sunday.
However, Casajeros was also caught "delivering a blow against FEU player Terrence Romeo on his blind side," but was not called for a disqualifying foul.
"Due to the flagrant unsportsmanlike actions you displayed during your last game, you are therefore suspended for two official games," Loyzaga said in a memo addressed to Casajeros.
Mammie, meanwhile, was called for an unsportsmanlike foul when he "extended his foot at the landing area of Romeo" during the fourth quarter of their game.
It was Mammie's third unsportsmanlike foul of the season, which merits a two-game suspension.
Roque said they explained their interpretation of their players' actions to Loyzaga, and stressed that "on our side, we believe it's not intentional."
Roque said they are hoping that the suspensions will be "at least, downgraded."
"If not lift, downgrade," he said.
They are also planning to elevate their appeal to the UAAP Board if they are denied by the Technical Committee.
"Of course, eto 'yung process natin. The Technical Committee first and then, pag denied, we go to the UAAP Board," Roque said.
The UE Red Warriors have a 5-4 record this season.
