Barako import warns of 'tough' TNT
MANILA, Philippines – Barako Bull import Mike Singletary believes the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters remain one of the teams to beat in the PBA Governors Cup, thanks in part to their high-scoring reinforcement, Tony Mitchell.
“Any team with a guy who can dump 50 points on you has to be tough,” Singletary said in an interview with Quinito Henson of The Philippine Star.
Singletary was referring to Barako’s game against TNT last August 16, wherein Mitchell exploded for 48 points and powered the Texters to a 118-113 victory in overtime.
Singletary was no slouch in that game, scoring 41 points to go along with 21 rebounds, but it was ultimately not enough.
“We lost to them in overtime without their national players,” the import pointed out. “When they come back, they’ll be tougher to beat.”
Gilas players Jayson Castro, Ranidel De Ocampo, Larry Fonacier and Jimmy Alapag did not play in TNT’s first two games of the season as they took a brief rest following the FIBA Asia tournament.
Castro, De Ocampo and Fonacier are set to return in the Texters’ game against Meralco on Friday.
Meanwhile, Barako has won two consecutive games since the setback against Talk 'N Text. They have gotten strong contributions from players like Emman Monfort, Danny Seigle and Mick Pennisi.
