Sealions, MOB Alliance unbeaten in Espiritu Cup
MANILA, Philippines – Sealions, led by Egay Billones, and MOB Allianace, bannered by amateur standouts, kept their unbeaten records after beating separate opponents in the 2013 Danny Espiritu Cup last Saturday at the Makati Colliseum.
The veteran Billones churned out a double-double performance with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead Sealions past Globalport, 100-87.
Another ex-pro, Gilbert Malabanan, chipped in 21 points as Sealions erased a 13-point deficit in the first quarter to claim its second straight win.
Erwin Sta. Maria, a former guard for the Philippine Patriots in the ASEAN Basketball League, sizzled with 33 points for Globalport but did not draw enough support from their bench players.
In the second game, Jeff Viernes drained the game winner for Mob Alliance as they dealt defending champions Mighty Sports a 71-70 defeat.
Viernes connected on a fastbreak lay-up off a steal by Richie Melencion as MOB Alliance took its first and final lead of the game with just 16 seconds left.
Viernes, a former NAASCU MVP, topscored with 17 points to go along with four rebounds and five assists for MOB Alliance, who now have a 2-0 record.
It was a frustrating setback for Mighty Sports, which got off to a strong start and even led by 18 points, 57-39, with 3:13 to go in the third quarter.
Robby Celiz and Janus Lozada both had chances to snatch the victory back for Mighty Sports, but misfired on attempts from beyond the arc as time expired.
Bernson Franco, one of the holdovers from last year’s team, paced Mighty Sports with 17 points and eight rebounds while Celiz finished with 15 markers.
