Henderson hopes he’d still get UFC title shot

MANILA, Philippines – Mixed martial arts (MMA) legend Dan Henderson said he felt bad that he had to withdraw from his title fight against Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight king Jon Jones.

But he believed he wouldn’t be 100% against Jones with a knee injury.

“I had a slight tear in my MCL (medial collateral ligament) and it was real unstable,” said Henderson in Yahoo! Sports.

“I’m just bummed out that it had to come to withdrawing from the fight.”

Fortunately his injury wasn’t that bad. He said all he had to do was to heal and hope for the best for the next three months.

“No surgery is needed, luckily, but just got to immobilize it and ice it a lot for the next three or four weeks and then rehab it a little bit,” Henderson said. “Hopefully, I’d be 100 % they said in three to four months.”

The 41-year-old Henderson, however, is clueless about his future.

He already won the PRIDE Fighting Championships welterweight and middleweight titles aside from nabbing the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt.

He was hoping to get another title in the UFC, but the injury barred him from doing so.

“I don’t know [if I’ll still get the title shot]. I didn’t ask what was gonna happen if I didn’t take the fight,” said Henderson.

“It wasn’t going to be a part of my decision making process. I wanted to make sure I made the right decision for the right reasons. I still don’t know what’s gonna happen. I can only hope that I’m still in line for that title shot.”
