West's 47 points lift Bolts past Texters
MANILA – Import Mario West helped Meralco snap a two-game skid by towing the Bolts past the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, 92-86, on Friday PBA Governors’ Cup.
West poured in 47 points, 18 of them in the final period, to secure the Bolts’ second win in four games.
Cliff Hodge added a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Rey Guevarra had 12 points.
The Bolts struggled in the first two quarters before eventually solving the Texters’ defense in the second half.
“We’ve finally broken their zone (defense) in the second half. I thought that was the key,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio in the PBA website.
Meralco gave Talk ‘N Text a dose of its own medicine by shackling the latter’s scorers.
Tony Mitchell, who scored 48 points in their 118-113 win against Barako Bull two weeks ago, was the Bolts’ main target.
He finished with 32 points, but missed his last crucial shots.
“The best way to compete with a star-studded team is through defense and I think we did a good enough job on that,” said Gregorio.
“In the end I told them to continue to find ways to win, challenge every shot Mitchell takes,” he added.
Talk ‘N Text fell to its second loss in three games. It is now tied with San Mig Coffee at eighth.
