'Cotto seeks hefty purse for Pacman fight'
MANILA, Philippines – Miguel Cotto may be the sensible option for Manny Pacquiao, but it looks like the Filipino champion might reach an agreement for a fourth bout against Juan Manuel Marquez, according to boxing coach Freddie Roach.
Roach, Pacquiao’s boxing trainer, said a Cotto rematch looks to be the freshest option for his prized ward, but he claimed that the Puerto Rican is asking a hefty fight purse.
"I think the (Cotto fight) is the most sensible fight out there but Marquez is closer to being made though, because Cotto wants more money," Roach, Pacquiao’s boxing trainer, told the Examiner.
Cotto, who was defeated by Pacquiao in 2009, is one of the Pacquiao’s possible opponents for a ring return this November.
The other choices are Marquez and Timothy Bradley.
“Bradley, I feel there's no need for that fight because the whole word knows we beat him," said the multi-awarded boxing trainer. "Marquez, we've already done three times. Cotto makes the most sense to me because he just went the distance with [Floyd] Mayweather.”
“If we can knock him out again at 150, which he said yes to, and if we could knock him out again, our negotiating power with Mayweather would be a little stronger."
But Roach said that if Mayweather comes up to negotiate, the other candidates would probably be dropped off.
"We want Floyd to come to the table and try and negotiate that," he said. "That would supersede any other fight."
