UFC: Brandon Vera loses in return to heavyweight
MANILA, Philippines - Filipino-American mixed martial artist Brandon "The Truth" Vera succumbed to Ben Rothwell in their heavyweight clash in the undercard of UFC 164 in Milwaukee Saturday (Sunday morning in Manila).
Vera, fighting at heavyweight for the first time in five years, was knocked out by Rothwell at the 1:54 mark of the third round.
"The Truth" used his speed to get a way from Rothwell in the first round, while landing some powerful kicks early. Rothwell rebounded in the second round, landing a head kick and stuffing Vera's takedown attempts.
Most of the action came in the third round of the fight, when Rothwell sent Vera crashing to the canvas with a right hand and then unleashed several more punches, prompting the referee to stop the bout.
It was Vera's second consecutive loss after losing to former light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua in August 2012. His last victory came in October 2011, when he decisioned Eliot Marshall.
Meanwhile, Rothwell continued his recent streak of alternating wins and losses. His MMA record now stands at 33-9.
