Tipon notches 2nd RP win in World Amateurs

MANILA - 2006 Asian Games medalist Joan Tipon became the second Filipino boxer to notch a win in the ongoing preliminaries of the AIBA 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Milan, Italy on Wednesday.

Tipon outpointed Kamal Sameera Ananda Gamaethiralalage 8 to 3 in the bantamweight 54 kilogram division, according to the event’s official Web site www.aiba.org. Tipon led in all the scorecards of the five judges of the match.

Filipino junior welterweight Genebert Basadre earlier outpointed his Pakistani foe to give Team Philippines its first win.

Basadre scored 5-1 against Muhammad Aamir Khan of Pakistan in their match up at the 64 kilogram division.

Tipon and Basadre are two of the five Filipino boxers competing in the World Amateur tilt. Also participating in the two-week tourney that lured over 600 boxers from 144 countries are two-time Olympian Harry Tañamor, Charly Suarez and Joegin Ladon.

Ladon is set to fight next and will contend with a British Thomas Stalker Wednesday evening (Milan time) in the lightweight 60 kilogram division.

Suarez is scheduled to fight a Romanian opponent on Thursday in the featherweight 57 kilogram division.

Tañamor, meanwhile, is slated to fight an Armenian boxer on September 5 after he reportedly drew a bye in the first round of preliminaries.
