MANILA, Philippines – The problems of the University (UE) of the East Red Warriors continue as guard Ralf Olivares has been suspended for two games due to his “unsportsmanlike” behavior in their game against National University last week.
In a memorandum, the UAAP Technical Committee noted three instances when Olivares committed unsportsmanlike behavior.
“You (Olivares) were seen planting your foot on the stomach of NU player Nico Javelona after an offensive foul was called against you with 6:43 remaining in the second quarter. An additional unsportsmanlike foul against the opposing player should have been assessed against you,” according to the memo.
Olivares was then called for an unsportsmanlike with 1:53 to go in the third quarter when he swung his elbow at the face of NU’s Robin Rono. It was Olivares’ fifth foul of the game.
Midway through the final quarter, Olivares was seen bumping NU’s Joeffrey Javillonar near the UE bench. A technical foul was called against the Red Warriors bench as Olivares had already fouled out of the game at that point.
“In light of the multiple instances of unsportsmanlike behavior you displayed during the game, you are therefore suspended for two official games effective immediately,” according to the memo.
UE will play De La Salle and Ateneo in their next two games, with both contests having major implications on the Final Four race.
Olivares’ suspension is another blow to UE’s already sputtering campaign, as they will play the Green Archers without center Charles Mammie, who will serve the second of a two-game ban as well.
They will welcome back defensive-minded guard Lord Casajeros in the La Salle game, but will miss the outside sniping of Olivares and the imposing inside presence of Mammie.
UE currently has a 5-5 record at sixth place in the league standings.
Meanwhile, NU center Emmanuel Mbe was given a warning by the UAAP Technical Committee after a review of their game against UE showed that he “elbowed UE player Christopher Javier on his face.”
It was Mbe’s first warning for unsportsmanlike behavior in the season. A second warning will merit an automatic one-game suspension.
