Top Rank, GBP may go head-to-head on Dec. 8

MANILA, Philippines – Rival promotional companies Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) may end up dueling anew as both are planning to hold boxing events on the same date later this year.

Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer informed Boxing Scene that they have reserved the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for December 8.

Meanwhile, Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum revealed last week that Filipino fight king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao plans to return to the ring on December 8 as well.

Late last week, it was announced that Puerto Rican boxing star Miguel Cotto has failed to come to terms on a rematch with Pacquiao for December 1, instead deciding to challenge Austin Trout on that date at the Madison Square Garden.

Thus, Top Rank is now focusing on December 8 as the most likely return date for Pacquiao, putting them on a collision course with Golden Boy.

The Filipino boxer will face either Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez or American boxer Timothy Bradley Jr.

Schaefer told Boxing Scene that they reserved the date and the venue even before Top Rank re-scheduled Pacquiao’s ring return for December 8. The Filipino boxer had originally planned to fight again on November 10 but could not find a suitable opponent.

“We’ve had that date for a long time. We’ve had the date reserved on pay-per-view for a long time as well,” Schaefer claimed. “We are working on a big event for December the 8th and I’m going to leave it at that for now.”

“I’m not really worried about what other promoters are doing,” he added. “I want to put together big events, big fights, exciting fights, so I can’t really worry about what other people are doing.”

The two promotional companies are already going head-to-head this September 15, when Top Rank presents the WBC middleweight championship bout between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez, while Golden Boy presents the WBC junior middleweight title bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Josesito Lopez.

But the December 8 fight date can wind up being more interesting, as Boxing Scene reported that unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather Jr. may actually return to the ring on that date.

Schaefer did not comment on that rumor, only saying that the main event of the December 8 fight card will depend on the result of Alvarez’s title defense against Lopez.
