NU's Mbe named UAAP Player of the Week
MANILA, Philippines – National University (NU) center Emmanuel Mbe has been named the ACCEL 3XVI UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week after his imposing inside presence helped power the Bulldogs to a five-game winning streak in the Season 76 tournament.
Mbe is making sure that NU remains a force to be reckoned with in the tournament even without help from fellow Cameroonian Alfred Aroga, who failed to complete his eligibility documents in time.
He proved this anew last Saturday, scoring a game-high 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds while steering NU to an 81-73 victory against the depleted but hard-fighting University of the East (UE) Red Warriors.
In that win, Mbe pounced on the absence of the suspended Charles Mammie, and did his best work in the final period when he scored eight points to allow NU to pull away for good.
“Mammie was not there, but I knew it was still going to be a big battle,” Mbe said afterwards. “We just came out to play our game.”
A member of the UAAP Mythical Five three years ago, Mbe has averaged 13 points and 9.4 rebounds during NU’s five-game winning streak. They currently have an 8-3 record and are now on top of the league standings.
Mbe edged teammate Ray Parks, Karim Abdul of the University of Santo Tomas and La Salle guard Almond Vosotros for the weekly distinction backed by Gatorade and given by sports scribes from national broadsheets, tabloids and online publications.
