Ginebra hammers Air21
MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra boosted its title aspirations by drubbing Air21, 106-93, in the PBA Governors Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome on Wednesday.
Dior Lowhorn led the way with 35 points for the Gin Kings, who also got 18 points and 14 assists from prized playmaker LA Tenorio.
From a 54-51 halftime lead, Ginebra widened the gap to 19 points with an 80-61 advantage in the third quarter.
Gin Kings’ coach Ato Agustin told the league website that they experimented with their starting line-up and it paid huge dividends in the end.
“Nagbago kami ng starting line-up at medyo nahirapan kami noong una. But we eventually progressed. Gumanda ang matchup,” said Agustin.
He said that minus injured bigmen Kerby Raymundo and Japeth Aguilar, Ginebra was forced to field a smaller starting unit.
“We go small in a bid to make up for our weaknesses. Pwersado naman kami talagang magmaliit dahil wala si Japeth at Kerby,” Agustin also said.
Mark Caguioa, Willy Wilson and Jayjay Helterbrand were able to deliver double-digit outputs.
Caguioa scored 20, while Wilson had 11. Helterbrand came up with 10 points.
Despite smaller but faster players, Ginebra dominated the rebounding department with 48 boards against Air21’s 40.
The Gin Kings improved to 2-3, good for seventh place. The Express, meanwhile, remained at the bottom with a 1-5 slate.
