'Bata-Django' tandem reaches World Cup semis
MANILA -- Billiards legends Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante cruised into the semifinal round of the 2009 PartyCasino.net World Cup of Pool by overpowering Team England at the SM North Edsa in Quezon City on Saturday.
Reyes and Bustamante, who make up Philippines Team B, made quite an easy work of England's Imran Majid and current World 10-Ball Champion Darren Appleton by scoring 9 racks to 1 during their quarterfinals match up.
According to MatchRoomPool.com, the old magic of Reyes and Bustamante seemed to work as the Filipino tandem zoomed ahead their rivals, 3-0.
Team England got the chance to score after running the next rack, 3-1.
The Filipinos had some jitters midway the match but were able to pull through the succeeding racks.
Among the highlights of the match took place in Rack No. 6 when Bustamante made a tricky jump shot to the delight of the homecrowd.
The next assignment for the Pinoy legends will be Chinese tandem Li Hewen and Fu Jianbo in a match up between former World Cup titlists.
Reyes and Bustamante were the 2006 World Cup champs while Li and Fu were the title holders of the tournament's 2007 edition.
Team China made it into this year's semifinals by ousting defending champions Shane Van Boening and Rodney Morris of the US, 9-5, in their own quarterfinal clash.
Meanwhile, Philippines Team A tandem of Dennis “Robocop” Orcollo and Ronnie “Volcano” Alcano will have to go through Polish partners Radoslaw Babica and Mateusz Śniegocki to make it into the semifinals.
