UAAP to allow Bartolome to swim for UP
MANILA, Philippines – The UAAP has decided to allow University of the Philippines (UP) swimmer Mikee Bartolome to participate in the Season 76 swimming competition following an eligibility meeting by the league board on Thursday.
In a text message, UAAP secretary-treasurer Malou Isip said Bartolome will now be allowed to compete.
“She’s on the UP swim line-up. No choice but again respect the TRO, or else ma-contempt naman kami,” Isip said.
Bartolome’s father, Vic, on Tuesday secured a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the UAAP’s residency rule which mandates a high school athlete transferring from one UAAP school to another to serve a two-year residency period.
Earlier, Isip said that while the UAAP Board respects the TRO, they will revert to the old UAAP rule which mandates a one-year residency period unless an athlete secures a release from his high school.
“May old rule kami of one-year residency,” Isip said, adding that Bartolome’s high school, the University of Santo Tomas, has a “no release policy.”
But the UAAP Board changed their stand later Thursday, which will allow Bartolome to participate in the UAAP swimming competition on September 19 to 22.
