Bolts blast Painters for solo 2nd place
MANILA, Philippines – Meralco stretched its win streak to three by stifling defending champion Rain or Shine, 82-76, at the PBA Governor's Cup on Friday.
Meralco locals stepped up for Mario West, who was limited by the Elasto Painters to just 17 points.
John Wilson had 18 points while Cliff Hodge added 17 points for the Bolts' fourth win in six starts.
Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio said Rain or Shine may have succeeded in defending against West, but he added that the Bolts were able to give the Elasto Painters a dose of their own medicine.
“We really dug deep to find ways to win,” said Gregorio in the PBA website. “It was again a defensive struggle and that’s the only way to win.”
Meralco’s defense held Rain or Shine down to 31-out-of-88 from the field. This included measly 4-for-27 attempts from the free throw area.
“We were able to reach our goal. Rain or Shine was limited to below 80 points,” he said.
Import Arizona Reid and Jireh Ibanes were the only players who scored double figures for the Painters.
Reid tallied 22 markers while Ibanes added 18 points.
Rain or Shine’s record dropped to 3-3.
