Suarez wanes in World Amateurs

MANILA – Filipino Charly Suarez, who overpowered his Romanian foe on Thursday, fell short against South Korean Joo Min Jae on Sunday at the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan, Italy.

Suarez lost to Joo, 5-11, in their 55 to 57 kg division bout.

According to AIBA.org, Joo fired away five points in round one while Suarez made one point.

The two fighters proceeded to score three points each in the second round. Joo made another three points in the third while Suarez scored a lone point.

The Filipino boxer dominated his match against Iulian Stan of Romania, 18-8, last Thursday.

Suarez is among the more than 600 fighters who are entered in the world amateur boxing tournament.

Aside from Suarez, fighters Genebert Basadre, Joan Tipon, Joegin Ladon, and Harry Tañamor also represented the Philippines in the AIBA World Championships in Milan.
