NEW YORK – Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland reached the quarter-finals of the US Open on Tuesday with a marathon 7-6 (11/9), 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win over Sam Querrey of the United States.

Wawrinka will play 12th seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia for a place in the semifinals.

The defeat means that there will be no US player in the men's singles quarter-finals for the second year in a row. Last year was the first time that had happened in the Open era dating back to 1968.

Wawrinka joins Roger Federer in the last eight, making it the first time two Swiss players have reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam in the Open era.

The match lasted four hours 28 minutes.

"It was an amazing match to finish here and to beat him in five sets was crazy. I was just fighting all the time to keep aggressive with my game," the 25-year-old Wawrinka said after reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Wawrinka reached the fourth round by playing some of the best tennis of his life to defeat fourth seed Andy Murray of Britain in four sets, while all the pressure was on Querrey as the last US player left in the tournament.

Serves dominated in the first set which went inexorably towards a tie-break won by 11-9 by Wawrinka after both men had set points.

Wawrinka had his first break points of the match in the fifth game but failed to take them.

Four games later though he finally made the breakthrough at 40-15 up, drawing Querry into the net and passing him with a forehand down the line on break point.

Wawrinka had four points to clamp a stranglehold on the match on his following serve, but failed to take them and paid the price when Querrey converted his first break point.

A second tie-break followed with Querrey running off six points in a row from 0-3 down en route to leveling the set scores.

With the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd finally starting to get behind him, Querrey broke again in the third game of the third set, but three games later Wawrinka was back on level terms with a break of his own.

A third straight tie-break seemed inevitable, but at 6-5 for Wawrinka, Querrey made a mess of three volleys in a row to drop serve and hand the set to his opponent.

Querrey had his back to the wall, but in the seventh game he took advantage of some sloppy play from Wawrinka to break for the second time.

Re-energized, Querrey served out twice to level the set scores once again and he looked the fresher in the deciding set until Wawrinka gathered his forces for one last push in the 10th game finishing Querrey off with a chip and charge on his second match point.
