Air21 exec hopes Asi will stay with Express
MANILA, Philippines – Air21 is assured of Asi Taulava’s services until next season’s PBA Philippine Cup.
However, Air21 executive Lito Alvarez is hoping that Taulava, considered the most dominant big man the PBA has ever had, will stay with the Express until he retires.
The Air21 franchise has acquired Taulava’s rights from Meralco, paving the way for the Fil-Tongan’s return to the PBA.
“We entered into this deal with the blessing of SMC since Asi is under contract with them in the ABL (Asean Basketball League). Generous naman ang San Miguel, they allowed us to get Asi,” Alvarez said in the PBA website.
Taualva was traded to the Express along with Mark Borboran. In exchange, Meralco got Mike Cortez and James Sena.
“We’re sure that Asi’s playing for us till the Philippine Cup,” said Alvarez. “After that, it’s up to San Miguel if they want Asi back. Kung hindi naman, Asi can stay with us. Pwedeng sa amin na siya mag-retire.”
Taulava played for Meralco until 2012, when he signed up for the San Miguel Beermen to play at the ABL.
He led the Beermen to their first ABL title and was even named the league’s 2013 Most Valuable Player.
