Alcantara crashes out of US Open

MANILA - Filipino junior netter Francis Casey Alcantara failed to get past the first round of the 2009 US Open Junior Boys' Singles and Doubles in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Marton Fucsovics of Hungary and Cheng-Peng Hsieh of Chinese Taipei scored an upset by defeating the No. 3 seeds Alcantara and Daniel Berta of Sweden, 6-4, 6-3.

The Fucsovics-Hsieh pair won a total of 58 points with four winners while Alcantara and Berta had 51 total points won with two winners, according to the US Open official website.

Alcantara and Berta, the doubles winners at the 13th Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup in Malaysia and 20th Mitsubishi-Lancer International Tennis Federation (ITF) Juniors Championships, converted all their break point chances (2 of 2).

Their opponents, meanwhile, converted five of their 15 break point opportunities.

US Open debut

In his debut US Open match on Sunday, the 17-year-old Alcantara lost to 15th seed Dominik Schulz of Germany, 6-3, 6-4.

Schulz edged Alcantara by winning 64 total points as opposed to the Filipino’s 52 total points.

The German’s 1st serve percentage was 66 while Alcantara’s was at 52 percent.

Schulz had two aces and five double faults whereas Alcantara made one ace and six double faults.

Alcantara converted both of his break points (2 of 2) while Schulz converted five break points out of eight.

Alcantara’s best grand slam performance was at the Australian Open last January where he bagged the Junior Boys’ Doubles championship with Hsieh.

The teen netter, who hails from Cagayan de Oro City, has a current combined ranking of 34 as of Aug. 31.
