Viloria wants to be undisputed in 108-lbs
MANILA -- International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior flyweight champion Brian Viloria said he will be staying in the 108-pound division for some time.
“I hope there will be a couple of unification match for me… my goal right now is to hold four belts in my hands,” said Viloria who was accompanied by girlfriend Erica Navarro on Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue Branch in Manila.
“After that I can talk about moving to 112 pounds (flyweight division) which is where I’m more comfortable at,” said the amiable Hawaii-based Filipino boxer.
To do that, Viloria would have to face the junior flyweight title holders from the three other boxing sanctioning bodies: World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA).
WBO champion Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico is set to face Filipino contender Rodel Mayol on Sept. 12 while WBA Giovanni Segura of Mexico is coming off a win over another Pinoy Juanito Rubillar on July 25.
WBC title holder Edgar Sosa is no stranger to Viloria, having beaten the Filipino-American boxer for the crown in 2007.
Viloria said his manager Gary Gittleson is currently working on arranging his next fight.
“All of these depend on what does on this weekend. If that doesn’t work out we’ll try to see if get the shot for the WBC title again with Edgar Sosa. But he’s been elusive… he’s talking about going up in weight,” said Viloria.
The Filipino-American champion had just recently defended his IBF title from Jesus Iribe who he had beaten by unanimous decision.
He said he plans to keep himself busy and work more on improving his skills.
“I still have a lot to improve… I want to use more of my speed, and not rely too much on my power,” he said.
“I’m learning and I feel like get better each time I step into the ring. It comes a lot with being busy, I get to sharpen my skills. I don’t like taking long lay offs,” he said.
