Weiss calls Azkals win vs Singapore 'massive'
MANILA, Philippines – Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss was pleased by the performance of his players during their friendly game against Singapore on Friday.
The Filipinos shut out Singapore, 2-0, for the country’s first win against the “Lion City” since 1991.
“It was a very satisfying performance from the team. We dominated the game,” said Weiss in ASEAN Football.
The German coach said the win has improved the Azkals’ confidence level which will be important in their future game.
“It is a massive win for us and gives us a lot of confidence,” he said.
Chieffy Caligdong pried the game open for the Azkals in the 8th minute, when his shot went in despite nearly being deflected by the Singaporean keeper.
In the second half, it was Phil Younghusband’s turn to score by firing a left-footed shot to the goal in the 48th minute.
Filipino-German Stephan Schrock was responsible for creating chances for both of those goals.
Weiss said the Azkals will now need to improve its transition game.
“[They] should have played the counter more smartly and we could have scored more,” he said.
He also noted that although the Singaporeans had a good passing game, they struggled completing their play.
“Singapore played okay, although the final passes were missing. They moved the ball around quite a bit, but the pitch was not ideal for their kind of game,” said Weiss.
