NU targets twice-to-beat edge against La Salle
MANILA, Philippines – The National University (NU) Bulldogs and the De La Salle Green Archers look to extend their winning streaks at each other expense when they play their second-round game of the UAAP Season 76 tournament Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
NU has won six straight games and now sits at the top of the league standings with their 9-3 win loss record. A win today will give them a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four for the first time in school history.
La Salle, meanwhile, extended their winning run to five games after beating archrivals Ateneo last Sunday.
“I reminded the players that getting to the No. 1 spot gives you a false sense of security,” NU coach Eric Altamirano said after his team defeated UP last week. “Because of the tight standings, one day you’re number one but if you become complacent, you might find yourself in the lower rankings.
“We cannot rest on our laurels right now. We humbly take the top position, but we have to continue to work hard for us to be able to achieve our goal,” he added.
Altamirano is also wary of the “tough” La Salle squad, especially as he believes they are now getting used to the system of head coach Juno Sauler.
“We really have to prepare well for La Salle,” he said.
Sauler, for his part, downplayed the Archers’ five-game winning streak and wants his team to remain focused at the task at hand.
“What I keep telling everyone and the players is to focus on the game at hand, whoever it is that we’re playing, and keep the same mindset and same mental toughness,” he said.
The Green Archers are already assured of at least a playoff for a Final Four berth but can clinch a spot with a victory today.
Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
