Iverson tweets that he's going to Grizzlies
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Allen Iverson says he will play for the Memphis Grizzlies in the upcoming NBA campaign, sending a message on the public note-posting website Twitter that he will join the long-struggling club.
"God chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career," the former NBA scoring champion and 2001 NBA Most Valuable Player said in a message.
"I feel that they are committed to developing a winner and I know that I can help them to accomplish that. I feel that I can trust them."
The 34-year-old guard "tweeted" Wednesday that he met with Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, owner Michael Heisley and general manager Chris Wallace.
Iverson has agreed on terms for a one-year deal, the Commercial Appeal newspaper reported.
The Grizzlies, in a rebuilding mode since dealing away Spanish star center Pau Gasol to the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, have a young club that went 24-58 last season, scoring the second-fewest points in the league, 93.8 a game.
Iverson began his career with the Philadelphia 76ers and later played for Denver and Detroit. In 13 NBA seasons, he has averaged 27.1 points a game.
