Mayol ready for Calderon rematch
MANILA – Filipino fighter Rodel Mayol is aiming to get even with WBO junior flyweight champion Ivan Calderon when they clash on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in Puerto Rico.
Mayol and Calderon fought last June at the Madison Square Garden in the Joshua Clottey vs Miguel Cotto undercard.
Their 12-round bout, which resulted in a technical draw, was stopped at 1:15 in the sixth round due to excessive bleeding from a cut that Calderon sustained from an accidental head butt.
“I have come to fight a champion in his hometown and I know that many have failed to win against Calderon, who fights like an amateur boxer as he seldom engages in a toe-to-toe battle, always running away on his bicycle,” Mayol told Winchell Campos of PhilBoxing.com.
Mayol, who is also called “Batang Mandaue,” added that if his Puerto Rican foe will run away from him, he might have to do the same.
“I expect Calderon to run and not engage but I also have prepared to run a marathon if that is what will take for me to win,” remarked Mayol.
Mayol’s rematch with Calderon, also known as “Iron Boy,” will take place at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. – With a report from PhilBoxing.com
